A note from the founder of Welders Universe...

In addition to my welding hat, I have worked over the years with a full-time practicing human rights attorney based in San Francisco named Karen Parker. Recently, she told me she was unable to attend the June session of the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva because she didn't have the funds.

Most of Karen's work is pro bono, as victims of human rights violations around the world are typically not able to come up with a retainer fee. And she works in areas where the situation is pretty bad, like Somalia and Sri Lanka, where an estimated 50,000 Tamil people were killed in 2013 in the course of a protracted civil war. Larger human rights organizations tend to focus on places where there's lots of media attention, and most of these groups usually just publish reports, articles or press releases. They don't do much, if any, advocacy on behalf of the individuals affected by the crimes.

Karen, on the other hand, works with local human rights organizations that do try to get compensation and justice for the victims. One of her most effective tools for achieving that end is to provide testimony at the Human Rights Council. Representatives from over 100 countries listen to what she has to say, vote on resolutions condeming the violations, and often pitch in with huge sums of money, either to provide humanitarian relief or underwrite the cost of judicial reforms.

When I heard she didn't get to Geneva this summer, I immediately sent a donation. Then it occurred to me that Welders Universe reaches lots of other welders and students each month, and maybe some of you would be willing to help out as well. So I'm providing a link to the Paypal Page for Karen's organization, the Association for Humanitarian Lawers, which is a registered 501(c)(3) charity. Donations are tax deductible.

Note: You do not need a Paypal
account to make a donation..

Many thanks if you can help out with $5 or more.
